U-14 Soccer Semi-Final 20TH January 2010
Wexford CBS 4 : 2 De La Salle Wicklow (AET)

The u 14 team recently qualified for the Wicklow-Wexford final after a thrilling win in extra time against the reigning' Leinster champions De La Salle of Wicklow. With both teams having topped their respective groups and progressing with little difficulty in their quarter finals, this was always going to be a tight affair and indeed it proved to be just that.

Captained by Evan Dunbar, who was ably assisted in defence by Matthew Devereux, Ian Moran and Richard Kearney, the Wexford boys controlled the first half with some excellent football. Having created several chances the boys were finally rewarded when Bobby Barnes finished a sparkling move with a deft finish. With goalkeeper Jamie McDonnell dealing comfortably with all De La Salle could throw at him, the Wexford lads seemed to be in control.

A minute of madness before the break changed all that though with De La Salle taking advantage of two rare errors in the Wexford defence to score twice in sixty seconds. Unbelievably our lads came in at half time trailing 2-1.
However this team had not remained unbeaten without showing real character and this was displayed in abundance in the second half.

Led by the magnificent Robin Dempsey and the excellent support play of Conor Clancy, Dylan Walsh and Sean Stafford the CBS powered forward in surge after surge of attack. The pressure finally yielded its reward when Robin Dempsey broke into the box and crossed low for Bobby to score his and Wexford's second. A pulsating finish failed to produce a winner and so extra time was called for.

With De La Sale visibly wilting from the constant Wexford pressure it seemed only a matter of time before they resented. The tireless Dariush Smith was replaced by Cian Doyle and indeed it was the diminutive Doyle who found the net in the 3rd minute of extra time with a cool finish having found himself one on one with the Wicklow keeper. Minutes later, Wexford joy was doubled when the classy Dylan Walsh rounded the keeper and tucked away our fourth.

The lads then defended manfully as Wicklow searched desperately for a way back into the game. They couldn't find one however and the final whistle brought with it a great sense of satisfaction. The boys now face the multi-talented Gorey C.S. in the final on Tuesday 2nd February in Arklow at half one.

Gaelic Football
South Leinster Semi-Final
Wexford C.B.S 0-3: Hackettstown 1-13

The Senior Football bowed out of the Leinster Championship after a heavy defeat to the Carlow side on Wednesday 20th January. Preparations were hampered by the bad weather and the performance on the day was well below what the side had produced in previous outings. The team will now concentrate on the Keevans Cup, having defeated St. Peter's College in the last round.

Table Tennis
Both the school's Junior and Senior teams have made it through to the quarter finals of the Leinster Cup. Coincidentally, both teams will play Castleknock College, with both games due to be played the week commencing 1st February.

Table tennis coaching will commence again shortly and any student interested in taking part should contact Derek Hatchell.

February - March

Boxing Champions
Congratulations to Jack Robinson (2nd Year Elm) and Dean Walsh (3rd year Oak) on their recent boxing success. Jack became Leinster Boy 4 champion, winning the title on a 6-1 score. Dean became Leinster Youth 1 Champion when his fight was stopped in the third round.

Heading for the Youth Olympics?
Marco Pons (Fifth Year) is currently preparing to qualify for the World Youth Olympic trials in Moscow in May in the Discus. A new throwing circle was built in the school field to facilitate his preparation at lunch time and we are hopeful of a return on our investment. He is fast moving towards a qualifying distance. His coach is pleased with his progress. Marco's aim is to qualify in Moscow for the World Youth Olympics in August.

Athletics
Those students interested in taking part in the Leinster Athletics championships should talk to Mr. Ahearne re registration. We have a number of very talented sprinters such as Conor Wilson (Transition Year) and Craig Maher (Fifth Year) in our ranks so we are hopeful of landing some silverware. Conor has recently been awarded Juvenile Athlete of the Year 2009 for County Wexford by the Athletics Association of Ireland.

This is in recognition of winning four national titles in 2009, which were the 200m indoor: 100m and 200m and 4x 100 relay outdoor. Conor also ran well in the 60m indoor, coming second in an exciting photo finish. More recently Conor represented Leinster with Craig in the Scottish Open Championships. He came third in the 200m.

Conor also won the 60m at the recent Leinster Indoor Championships and won the 200m in a personal best time of 23.77 seconds.

Table Tennis
The Junior team consisting of Gary Jordan, Rory Mahon, Dean Wilson and Mark Hayes defeated Blackrock College in the Leinster Junior Cup Quarter-final on a final score of 4-2. The Senior team consisting of Jake Kells, Eamonn Roche, Brian Walsh and Shane Murray were defeated by Blackrock College in the Leinster Senior League on a final score of 6-0.

Soccer
Under 15 Soccer New Ross V.C. 3 - 5 Wexford CBS

The U-15's got their campaign off to winning start in a high scoring affair away to New Ross on the 8th February . With the third years unavailable due to their mocks it gave an opportunity to several players to state their claim for a place in the team.

The Wexford side, featuring several of the U-14 beaten finalists, was still strong and began very well with goals from Conor Clancy, Robin Dempsey, and Brandon Nolan. The second half afforded Wexford the opportunity to use all five subs and though New Ross were rewarded for their hard work with 3 well taken goals, Brandon Nolan managed to add two more to complete his hat trick.

Top performances on the day were the excellent Ian Moran, Ludwig Erlacher and Kyle Mann. A special word for captain John Bridges who led by example throughout. The lads must now face Wexford V.C. and Kilmuckridge V.C. in their bid to qualify as group leader.

Team: Robin Dempsey, Ludwig Erlacher, Jamie McDonnell, Evan Dunbar, Brandon Nolan, Matthew Devereux,, Dylan Walsh,Kyle Mann, John Bridges, Ian Moran, Conor Clancy, Bobby Barnes, Colin Murphy, George Cullen, Dale Scallan, Aaron McMahon.

Wexford CBS 2 - 1 Wexford V.C.

The U-15's continued their excellent start to the campaign with a very hard fought win in this local derby with Wexford V.C on Thursday 11th February 2010. Still without the third years who were sitting their mocks and hit by a couple of injuries, a major reshuffle saw captain John Bridges playing at centre half, much against his will!

However John and his fellow defenders dealt comfortably with their opponents and any threat was quickly snuffed out by the excellent Gavin Byrne, who was making his debut in goal.
Offensively however our lads were having great difficulty in breaking down a well marshalled and resolute defence.

Twenty minutes in to the second half the game was still scoreless though the CBS had dominated possession. Just when a stalemate seemed inevitable the breakthrough finally came with Robin Dempsey applying the finish after some smart work in midfield. Five minutes later Dempsey got his second heading in an excellent Bridges free kick.

The V.C. scored a much deserved consolation in injury time though an equaliser never seemed likely. With the withdrawal of Kilmuckridge V.C. this win now sees the CBS through to the quarter finals where they will have home advantage. Special mention must go to the outstanding efforts of Ian Moran at left back and Kyle Mann on the right wing. Both players are proof that skill and heart are for more important than size.

U-14 Soccer Wexford - Wicklow Final
Gorey CS 1-0 Wexford CBS

A heartbreaking end to a glorious season for the U-14's began on Tuesday 2nd February when the team travelled to Gorey to take on the local school in the Wexford - Wicklow final. Both teams fielded very strong sides though Wexford were denied the services of Matthew Devereux (chest infection) and Aaron McMahon (stomach bug).

Having won the toss and elected to play into a stiff breeze, Wexford began the brighter of the two sides and pushed strongly for an opening goal. Inspired once more by the central midfield pairing of Robin Dempsey and Conor Clancy, the Wexford lads dominated possession.

The tireless work of the forwards Dariush Smith and Bobby Barnes failed however to yield its reward. With several county players in their starting line up, Gorey were never going to be kept quiet for long and soon gained a foothold in the match. Our back four of Ian Moran, Richard Kearney, Captain Evan Dunbar, and the excellent Andrew McGuckian dealt manfully with all Gorey could throw at them.

McGuckian, a young first year thrown in at the deep end, deserves special mention for the way he handled himself under constant pressure. Heaving seemingly weathered the storm Wexford were hit with a sudden blow as Gorey scored right on half time. A free kick found its way to the Gorey right winger who tucked it away neatly from 6 yards.

Once more during their campaign the Wexford lads had to turn around trailing. The hard working Sean Stafford and Dariush Smith were replaced by George Cullen and Cian Doyle as Wexford looked to freshen things up. On several occasions our lads threatened to bring the game level as Dempsey, Doyle and the skilful Walsh forced Gorey onto the back foot.

It was at this stage that both goalkeepers deserve great credit for some excellent saves, Jamie McDonnell in particular for a couple of spectacular saves that kept Wexford in it. The tiring Walsh was then replaced by another young first year, Luke Byrne, as Wexford threw the proverbial sink at Gorey. Time proved to be the enemy though and despite a monumental effort it was Gorey who ran as winners in the end.

Our lads can hold their heads up high as they were excellent throughout the season. Mr. Codd would also like to thank Fr. Brian Whelan for his support in travelling to all the games, without which the team could not compete. A big well done to all the players and fingers crossed that next year we can go that one step further.

Senior Football 2010
Good Counsel College (New Ross) came from eight points behind at one stage to defeat Wexford C.B.S. by a point in Páirc Charman on Tuesday of last week in the Keevans Cup 'B' football schools final. The Wexford team got the ideal start with two goals inside the opening five minutes, and they led by 3-1 to 0-2 at the end of the opening quarter.

C.B.S attacked from the throw in and their big full-forward, Dermot Flood, had the ball in the Good Counsel net from close range inside the first minute. Mid fielder Colm Browne accounted for their second goal three minutes later. Darren Foley and Noel Colfer then opened the Good Counsel account with a point apiece, with Colfer electing to tap the ball over the bar when a goal opportunity seemed on. The ball was very soon back in the net again at the other end when a long kick in by Barry Harpur appeared to be going wide, but Dermot Flood followed up and somehow succeeded in making a connection with his boot right on the endline.

To the surprise of all and not least the advancing New Ross' keeper, Kevin Burke, it cured inside the post, and that third goal left the Wexford town school 3-1 to 0-2 ahead at the midway stage of the first-half. With the aid of a well-taken goal in the 16th minute by Shane O'Gorman following a fine passing move which extended the length of the pitch, Good Counsel came much more into the game. By half-time they had cut the deficit to a point (3-1 to1-6) as Darren Foley, Ciaran Butler and Darragh Doyle followed up with some delightful points.
C.B.S. pulled away again early in the second-half when Brian Walsh and Colm Browne pointed, but they

suffered a severe blow near the end of the third quarter when Darren Foley goaled from a penalty from Good Counsel after Larry Martin was fouled.

Minutes later the ball was back in the C.B.S. net again when Shane O'Gorman scored his second goal following another fine movement in which Jack Guiney played a big part. A Darragh Doyle point put the New Ross side four points clear five minutes from the end, but C.B.S. didn't give in without a fightback and they finished just one point adrift after substitute Marco Pons accounted for their fourth goal with time almost up.

School Hurling League:

The school Hurling League for under-14s has just finished. The teams were Apollo, Neptune, Lactans and Somnus in recognition of the introduction of Classical Studies to the curriculum next year.

Apollo (captained by Sean Stafford) qualified for the final after some sterling displays while it went down to the wire to see who would meet them. In the last group game, Neptune (Evan Dunbar) played Lactans (Richie Cleary) and it really was a winner takes all encounter, with Lactans emerging victorious.
Apollo defeated Lactans in the final.

Somnus (Joseph McBride) finished bottom of the table with just a bonus point to show for their three games. Bonus points were awarded for teams losing by less than six points.

The internal league has helped to improve many of our players and it showed in the recent Flo-Gas drawn final and replay against Ramsgrange. CBS, captained by Sean Stafford, won the replay in Wexford Park by 4-9 to 2-6.

Wexford CBS....................4-9
Ramsgrange CS.................4-9

After extra-time

A last gasp goal from Evan Dunbar secured a draw for Wexford CBS in the Flo-Gas Colleges Juvenile B final against Ramsgrange CS in Ramsgrange Tuesday 18th May after an exhilarating game of hurling which required extra-time.

The game finished level after normal time on a score of 2-7 each and a measure of how close the game was is that there was just one point between the sides at half-time of normal time (1-4 to 1-3 in favour of CBS).

Ramsgrange started off in flying form and led by 0-3 to nil after ten minutes. Then the game swung in favour of CBS as Sean Stafford converted a '65 and then added a free. Joe Coleman collected a Jamie McDonnell pass and fired over to level the game.
Shortly after this Coleman edged his side in front with a pointed free. Coleman then laid on a pass for Evan Dunbar to drive the ball to the net.

CBS were brought back to earth when Ramsgrange pulled a goal back before half-time to leave CBS with a one point lead at the break.

The second half followed a similar vein as the lead changed hands constantly. Evan Dunbar pointed but Ramsgrange came back into it before two pointed frees from the outstanding Sean Stafford put CBS back in front.

It looked all over for Wexford CBS when Ramsgrange goaled with very little time left but Gearoid Finn made a brave run before kicking the ball to the net with seconds left to leave the score level at 2-7 each.
Extra-time beckoned and Ramsgrange seemed to be in control in the first half and they retired for the short break with a 3-8 to 2-9 advantage.

A fine Joe Coleman goal brought CBS back into it but they still had lots of work to do and very little time left. However a last gasp attack secured a penalty and even though Sean Stafford's shot was saved, Evan Dunbar pounced and batted the ball to the net. The final whistle sounded on the puck-out.

This was a super game of hurling with play flashing from end to end for the duration and great skills on display from both sides. Best for CBS were Luke Byrne, Ciaran Kirwan, Sean Stafford, Gearoid Finn, Jamie McDonnell, Evan Dunbar and Joe Coleman.

Wexford CBS: Brad Cohen (St. Martin's); Ciaran Kirwan (Faythe Harriers), Richie Cleary (Clonard), Mark Chapman (Faythe Harriers); Dylan Hynes (Clonard), Sean Stafford (St. Martin's, Capt. 0-6, 5f 1 '65), Luke Byrne (Faythe Harriers); George Cullen (Volunteers), Gearoid Finn (St. Anne's, 1-0); Nicky Lawlor (Faythe Harriers), David Tormey (Clonard), Jamie McDonnell (Faythe Harriers); Joseph McBride (Volunteers), Evan Dunbar (St. Martin’s, 2-1), Joe Coleman (St. Martin’s 1-2, 1 free).

Flo-Gas Colleges Juvenile B Hurling final replay
Wexford Park
Wed May 26th, 2010

Wexford CBS.................................................4-9
Ramsgrange CS.............................................2-3

A strong second half performance resulted in Wexford CBS lifting the Flo-Gas Juvenile Colleges B title in Wexford Park on Wednesday 26th May.

The sides were very close at the interval with CBS leading by 3-2 to 2-1 but with a strong wind blowing into the Clonard End, the Wexford town school gradually got on top and wore down their opponents.

Ramsgrange struck first when they pounced for a fine goal in the fifth minute. However shortly afterwards, Nicky Lawlor placed CBS full-forward Evan Dunbar with a neat pass and he smashed the ball to the net.

Ramsgrange had wind advantage in the first half but stout defending from Conor Fenlon, Luke Byrne and CBS captain Sean Stafford held them out.

The Ramsgrange keeper made two astonishing saves from Evan Dunbar in the middle of the first half but Dunbar eventually found the net for the second time in the 12th minute. Joseph McBride had a point but then Ramsgrange scored a fine goal to leave the score at 2-1 to 2-0.
CBS enjoyed a huge slice of luck just before half-time when Gearoid Finn’s effort at a point dipped at the final second and nestled in the net.
It was a significant boost for the CBS before the break and a Sean Stafford pointed free gave them a 3-2 to 2-1 half-time lead.

Ramsgrange were restricted to just two points in the second half as the CBS defence was outstanding. CBS swapped Evan Dunbar with Sean Stafford as the latter was carrying an injury which flared up. Stafford went to full-forward where he caused havoc and scored a total of 1-5.

The hurling was of a very high standard throughout and matched the high skills that were shown in the drawn match the previous week.
Best for CBS were Conor Fenlon, Luke Byrne, Sean Stafford, Nicky Lawlor, Evan Dunbar and Joe Coleman.
After the game, George O'Connor presented the trophy to CBS captain Sean Stafford and praised both sides for the skills they had shown. He also encouraged both sets of players to constantly practice these skills.

ATHLETICS

Congratulations to Marco Pons and Conor Wilson who both qualified for the Irish Schools Athletic Finals in Tullamore on Sat. 5th Jun. Marco will throw the Discus and will be hoping for an Irish record. Conor will compete in the 200m Finals.

Marco has also been very busy recently as he was pursuing the qualifying distance for the European Youth Olympics in Moscow. He managed to secure this 55m distance in Liverpool. He had a further few weeks of intense training and competition before heading off to Moscow to represent Ireland.

Unfortunately, he didn't qualify for the World finals, but we are all very proud of his achievements and wish him well in the future.

BOXING

Congratulation to Dean Walsh who represented Ireland in Uzbekistan recently, in an International invitation tournament. He has a bright future in the sport. Well done also to Jack Crean and Jack Robinson who captured national titles this year.

Under 16 Gaelic Football

On March 18, we travelled to Gorey Community School for our first match in the Keevans Cup. On a wet and windy day, we were unlucky to lose by three points, two goals from Sean Pailing making for a very exciting finish. We were unfortunate not to make the most of the wind and a sloping pitch in the first half but, remarkably, went on to dominate much of the second half. Strong performers on the day were Ross Lynch, Peter Furlong (author of a first half wondergoal from a volley!), Dean Roche, the aforementioned Pailing, Gavin O'Connor, Colm O'Corcora and Dylan Lawlor.
A week later, we took on St Peter's, a big and strong outfit, which proceeded to put us convincingly to the sword, despite never-say-die performances from John Bridges, Seán Pailing, Peter Furlong and Adam Roche.
Much progress was noted in the team by its mentors, Mr Kirwan and Mr Dennehy, from our disappointing exit from the u16 Leinster competition to Kilkenny CBS in December. Hopefully, this will manifest itself in success at both this and senior level in 2010-2011! We will begin training early in September and if we can assure high numbers at training, continue to work on our togetherness and spirit of self-sacrifice for the team (leaving the ego and the "sakes" in the dressing room) we will surely go places!
